I love big fat cakey soft Chocolate Chip Cookies.
These, however, are my cookies:
Ya, not so fat and cakey and soft.
This cookie came from the same recipe I've used for years. It's the same recipe that has always, consistently yielded cakey, soft, delicious cookies.
So tell friends: WHY is this suddenly happening to my favorite cookie? What could have suddenly changed, when I am making the cookie the way I always have with the ingredients I've always used?

cakey or not, now I am craving a cookie.
Bad baking soda or powder? Change in your oven? Who knows why these things happen when baking.
Damn. Now I want a cookie.
expired baking powder or soda? it doesn't last forever...
change in humidity or altitude (don't ask about the first time I tried to bake at 7000 feet above sea level).....
I was thinking humidity too.
Have you tried refrigerating the dough before you cook it? I just tried David Lebovitz's recipe that has you roll the dough into logs, chill, then slice & bake. They're the tallest chocolate chip cookies I've ever made.
Well, since I'll soon be starting over with all of my kitchen staples (like baking powder/soda) we'll see if that's the culprit. I'm also moving from sea level to 5,000 feet, so we'll see what effect that has as well.
Jess-- did you buy his latest cookbook or use a recipe from his blog? I may have to check that recipe out when I get a kitchen again.
